With Redzel taking home the win for the Everest, the gelding can not only claim a back to back victory but so far, is the only horse to win Australia's richest horse race.
The race jumped from a set of Steriline Racing Platinum model starting gates that were purchased for Royal Randwick Racecourse in 2015. The Australian Turf Club purchased the safer, quieter model of gates for the benefits of faster and easier loading of the horses into the gates. They are the same model as used at Rosehill Racecourse and Canterbury Racecourse.
Fantastic footage of the start of the Everest race from a jockey cam on Redzel gives an interesting perspective of being inside the starting gates, and what it is like to ride the only winner of the Everest!
Commenting on the historic achievement by Redzel, syndicator Chris Ward said,
“Archer won the first two Melbourne Cups and now we have Redzel winning the first two Everests. To win the first Everest was unbelievable, to win the second one is beyond our wildest dreams.’’
After winning the race back to back Redzel took his prize money to a staggering $15,372,000, passing Makybe Diva’s $14,526,690 to move into second on the all-time prize money list behind Winx with $19,884,924.
Winx will, however, have the chance to increase her prize with the upcoming Cox Plate in late October.
